Cevdet Melez, 82 died January 10, 2019 at his Lakewood Ohio home surrounded by his family. Cevdet is survived by his wife of 60 years Inci Melez, son Bulent Richard Melez, daughter Jevin M. Dinchman, and grandchildren Derin Melez Wright, Taylan Melez, Taner Melez, Kent Dinchman, Kenan Dinchman, Altan Dinchman and Amber Dinchman.
Cevdet was born in 1936 in Istanbul Turkey. After earning his BS degree in Physics at the University of Ankara he was awarded a NATO Science Fellowship to pursue post graduate studies in the United States. Upon graduating from the University of Maryland, with a MS degree in Quantum Physics, Cevdet started a career in research with Corning Inc. During his 30 year tenure with Corning, he was granted several patents one most notably in 1984 for utilizing a scanning light beam and transparent optical waveguides for glass sensors. This research would help establish Corning Inc. as a leader in glass technology.
After his early retirement, he pursued his many interests that placed him in the air, sea and scenic highways. He took full advantage of his private pilot’s license flying friends and family for weekends to New York City, Atlantic City and New England. When not in the air he could be found on open seas sailing with his wife on their sailboat “Destiny” exploring the Chesapeake Bay and ports along the eastern seaboard. Cevdet was also an avid motorcycle rider who enjoyed riding his bike to discover backroads and parks, yet his favorite destination were to visit and cheer on his grandchildren at swim meets and tennis tournaments.
He was a man that knew how to live a full, adventurous life yet still take time to love those around him, most notably his grandchildren. Love for him was not a proclamation but a call to action. He always made time to spend with his grandkids including countless trips to the zoo, nature center, mall, Chucky Cheese and of course McDonald’s.
His most admired achievement in life is marrying his wife of more than 60 years who supported him in all his adventures in his heyday and lovingly supported him as his caregiver during their last days together.
At his request his family will not hold funeral services. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to Hospice of the Western Reserve.
