Richard, “Hooter” Allen Barger, 84 of Hickory, passed away quietly with his family at his bedside. Hooter was born October 10, 1934 in Catawba County to the late Noah Allen and Florence Mary Brown Barger.
Hooter was a United States Airforce Veteran. A long-time member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory, Richard graduated from Lenoir–Rhyne University with a bachelor’s degree in business. He worked many years for Charlie’s Bait Shop where he sold sporting goods and equipment, which he enjoyed. Later on he worked for Clyde Campbell Elementary School. Our husband, father, grandfather and friend can be best described as calm, cool, and collected. He rarely raised his voice and had a gentleness to his soul. Kind and giving were just a few of his wonderful traits. A passion of his was anything involved with sporting goods. He also took a special interest in photography and woodworking and his calm demeanor reflected in his work. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
Those left to cherish his memories are his loving wife, Margaret of 57 years; children, Leslie Dwin Barger, Kyle Evan Barger and his wife Florrie Marks, Kristi LaRae Barger; grandchildren, Dustin William Barger, Christopher Todd Metcalf, Darrious Adam Barger, Caleb Isaiah Hedgepeth, Emma Monique Barger, Valerie Elizabeth Barger and Douglas Alexander Barger.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 16th at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 2780 N Center St, Hickory, NC 28601 from 10-10:45 am. A celebration of Richard’s life will be celebrated at 11:00 o’clock am with the Reverend Ryan T. Ray officiating.
