1937 – 2019
Bertha Irma Guerra was born on March 12, 1937 in Corpus Cristi, Texas, the second daughter of Deantin Guerra and Juanita Caceres. Hers was a Christian home where her mother took the family to services regularly at El Mesías Presbyterian Church. Bertha and her siblings sang in the choir. She went to school in Corpus and graduated from Roy Miller High School in 1955.
She met Juan Francisco Martínez and they were married on September 26,1957. They moved a lot at the beginning as the family was growing; their children were born; Juan Jr. (Frankie) in Chicago, IL, Elizabeth (Liz) in Firebaugh, CA, Ruth Ann (Ruthie) in Placerville, CA and Daniel Esteban (Danny) in Pharr, TX.
While in Placerville in 1959 Bertha and Juan met Lyle and Clara Birkey and with their help had a very special encounter with Jesus Christ. Shortly after committing their lives to Jesus they felt led to Bible School to prepare for ministry and more effectively share their faith. They attended Río Grande Bible Institute in Edinburg, TX and while there they pastored La Capilla del Señor in Pharr, TX and ministered in other churches in the area.
In 1966 God called them to serve with Village Missions in Kettleman City, CA where they started Iglesia Evangélica El Calvario. They served in Kettleman City for over 30 years, and also started Iglesia Evangélica in Avenal, CA and ministered in a number of surrounding communities.
Bertha served the church and community in many capacities. She played the piano, taught children’s classes, led the women’s groups, organized dramas and camps, and cooked delicious meals for her family and anyone who showed up at the house hungry - she was known for her amazing tacos and refried beans. It was not unusual to have a houseful for lunch after church many Sundays. Her service to the community included counseling women, serving as chauffeur and spokesperson. She helped people with their government paperwork and applications, translated in court hearings, worked at the school, served at the polling place, was a member of the water district, and so many other things.
They moved to Colorado in 1998 to retire, but instead continued in ministry at Iglesia Hispana La Roca where Bertha continued in her love of teaching children’s Sunday School, singing and ministering to women. During these past 20 years her principal focus was ministry to prisoners. She wrote mountains of letters to people without hope and shared the hope, love and joy available through Christ. She and Juan sent Bibles to any who requested one.
Her passions were service to the needy, singing, letter writing, teaching children and cooking. She sang solos, in choirs, with her siblings, in small groups, and with her husband. She served hundreds of people through the years and many came to know Jesus as Savior and Lord because of her love.
She was welcome to her eternal home on January 23, 2019 - first by her Lord and Savior, then by many loved ones including her parents, her daughter, Ruthie, her daughter-in-law, Olga, her brother, Deantin and a great cloud of witnesses who glorify God and cheered her on to Glory.
