Art was born in Yonkers, NY, on December 6, 1946. As an army brat, he lived most of his childhood in Maine. Art voluntarily entered into the United States Army in November of 1968 and discharged in June of 1970. Art was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service to our country. He was very proud of his military service which unfortunately caused him to be 100% disabled. Art studied physics at the University of Maine where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree and ultimately met his wife Carole with whom he shared 47 years of marriage. After marrying on September 4, 1971, Carole and Art spent most of their married life in New Hampshire. In 2009, after the passing of his father-in-law, Carole and Art moved to Cape Cod where they have made their home ever since.
Art will be most remembered for his brilliance in physics, as a thinker and creator, and most importantly as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. For over 30 years, Art worked at Raytheon, at various locations, as an Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager.
When not working or spending time with his daughters, Art had a passion for showing and breeding his beloved Bulldog puppies, including his Grand Champion, Noah’s Ark Moby Dick. In addition, Art enjoyed collecting and repairing pocket watches and old clocks, and vacuum tube radios.
In addition to his wife Carole Lynn (Cathcart) Varanelli, survivors include his two daughters. Sara Marie Wild (her husband Geoffrey) of Milford, MA and their children Lilli and twins Olive and Penny; the three granddaughters lovingly referred to Art as Grampa Art. And by Heather Lynn Varanelli of Townsend, GA and her children Maria Tasciotti and Anthony “Tony” Varanelli both of whom devotedly referred to Art as Popi. While Art wasn’t much of a social butterfly, he is also survived by his close special friends and his loving pet including his dogs Lilly, Java, Violet Pearl, Georgia Peach and Moby Dick along with his cats Imax and Isis.
A graveside service of ashes will be held on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 11:15 at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA with a Celebration of Life to follow in Falmouth, MA. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to UNICEF or Boston Children’s Hospital.
