Ms. Juanita "Jenny" Velez, age 85, resident of San Antonio, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, January 29, 2019. She was born June 26, 1933 to the late Luis and Amelia (Soto) Velez-Vera, in Puerto Rico.
She graduated from Central High in Santurce, Puerto Rico and later attended ATI Culinary Arts School in Tyson, Virginia; where she obtained her degree in Culinary Arts.
She was a professional chef, an entrepreneur and published author. She was the proud owner of Amelia Home Appliances, Centro de Tarjetas y Regalos, Spanish American Bakery and El Kikiriki Restaurant. She had a profound knack for knowing and sharing all ‘tips and tricks’ that made cooking in any kitchen a success. All these she captured in her book: Orejitas Culinarias.
She was actively involved in church and was the Arca de Noe church treasurer. She was devoted to her family and was a dedicated daughter, mother, sister, aunt, friend and specially a passionate grandmother!
She is preceded in death by her parents, Luis and Amelia; sister, Carmen Velez; and brother, Rafael Velez.
She is survived by her sisters, Enery, Aida, Aidita, Luz Ester and Aida Luz; her brother, Jorge Luis Velez; children, Millie and husband Jorge Vazquez, Pedro and wife Gracie; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and many close friends she considered family.
Family is receiving friends on Friday, February 1, 2019 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Celebration of Life services will be conducted at 1:00 pm with Chaplain Evan Hierholzer officiating in the chapel at Sunset North Funeral Home. The family is hosting a catered reception immediately following in the hospitality suite.
