TUSCALOOSA - Alan G. Mason, age 69, a native of Butler, Alabama and longtime resident of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, surrounded by his family at UAB Hospital after a gallant fight with cancer.
Born October 15, 1949 in York, Alabama, he is preceded in death by his parents, O.D. and Alatha Mason.
Survivors include his wife, Jackie Ellis Mason of Waynesboro, Miss., sons, Christopher Lawrence (Amberly), Jordan Van Collier (Janna) and Morgan Alexander (Morgan); grandchildren, Ansley Catherine Mason, Cooper Benton Mason, Selah Noelle Mason, Sarah Abigail Mason, all of Northport; sisters, Dana Mason of Birmingham, Ala., Carol Mason Lucas of Tuscaloosa, Ala. and, Sheri Mason McLeod (Wright) of Augusta, Ga.; nieces, Collier Elizabeth McLeod of Atlanta, Ga., Margaret Wright McLeod of Washington, D.C. and Grace Walker McLeod of Athens, Ga.; nephews, Jarrod Lance Lucas of Mobile, Justin Chase Lucas (Brooke) and Jonathan Cole Lucas of Northport.
Alan spent his formative years in Butler, Alabama with the exception of his 10th grade year in Birmingham and 11th grade year in Waynesboro, Miss. Always an outstanding athlete, he was a member of the 1968 Choctaw County High School Basketball Championship team. He took great pride that the members of the team have remained close friends throughout the years. Most visited him during his final days. A 1968 graduate of Choctaw County High School, he received his Bachelor degree from the University of Alabama in 1973 and Law Degree from Birmingham School of Law. While attending The University he was initiated into Sigma Chi Fraternity. Spending 40 years as an independent petroleum land man he was well known throughout the state for his research and writing.
Every moment possible was always spent with family, coaching basketball at the local YMCA and motivating young people to take the lessons of sports and apply them to life. A fan of the Atlanta Braves, he had a friendship with a number of players and maintained contacts throughout his life. His great passion as a fan was his love for the Crimson Tide having attended over 400+ games in his life time.
A prolific reader throughout his life he was knowledgeable and not without opinion of many subjects and combined that with his passion for handwritten notes which are cherished by the recipients as he displayed an unusual gift of legible handwriting.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a memorial service at First Baptist Church, Greensboro Avenue, Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Alan will be laid to rest in the Mason Family section of the York Alabama Cemetery with his mother and father. Dr. Rick Lance officiating. Pallbearers:James L.
