Erma Jean Love Gimbel grew up in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from Upper Arlington High School and Ohio State University, Kappa Alpha Theta. She moved to NYC and eventually Morristown, N.J. where she raised her young children (having had 4 in 5 years). She shared with them her love of musical theater, always a Broadway show on the record player and a soft-shoe tap while she cooked. Several years later her dachshund Siggy performed at the annual OSB Christmas Stroll, singing and "playing" the piano while developing a devoted following and bringing joy to all that saw him.
Erma was a woman of remarkable energy and creativity. She was known to decorate a living room by sewing everything from elaborate draperies to slipcovers, having already mastered a multitude of elaborate costumes for her kids. Erma was also competitive in tennis and golf. She loved playing golf at Fenwick. She became a leader in every group she joined, from the PTA in her children's grade schools, fund raising for the Morris Museum, Old Saybrook Garden Club and its' Light Up Old Saybrook project, and was an active member of AAUW. She thoroughly enjoyed learning technology, and delivering creative newsletters and press releases.
Erma passed away on Feb 3, 2019 at the age of 89. She was a woman before her time, and her perspective, intelligence, and sense of humor will truly be missed.
She is survived by her 4 children and their families including 2 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to the ASPCA.
