Olive Semoy Assam “Nennie” 87, passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 5, 2019 . She was born August 16, 1931 to the late Chew Ashay and Clara Ankersingh in San Fernando, Trinidad. She later moved with her family to St. Thomas U.S.V.I before settling in Orlando Florida where she owned and operated a Pawn Shop for many years with her husband. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Assam of Trinidad and a grandson Daniel Assam. Olive is survived by her children Linda (Patrick) Khelawan, Desmond “Babie” (Jennie) Assam, Patsy (Jackie) Young, Bernadette (Henry) Doogarsingh, Jerry (Crystal) Assam; eleven grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren, who she leaves to love and cherish her memory.
Olive felt called to convert to the Catholic faith as a young girl, and her faith was central to her life. She was a member of the Legion of Mary at St. Augustine Catholic Church, where she enjoyed cooking for the homeless and serving as a Eucharistic Minister when called on. She loved to travel with her family. Olive enjoyed a party and could be found leading the Conga line! Olive was an avid gardener of fruits, vegetables and flowers. She loved to cook the food of her native Trinidad for family and friends including her famous banana and fruit cakes.
The Viewing will be held February 13, 2019 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 375 Sunset Dr N, Casselberry, FL 32707 from 10-11 am, with the Mass and celebration of her life to follow at 11 am, Burial will be at Noon at All Faith's Memorial Park, 1390 Park Drive, Casselberry, FL 32707.
