Dorris Brown Calvin, Sr., age 95, passed away early Thursday morning February 7th at NHC in Hendersonville. Born in 1923 on July 12th asthe son of Frances and William Berry Calvin, he was one of five children.
On September 12, 1942, he married the love of his life, Jewell Walton Hall. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage, raising three children and traveling the world before she preceded him in death on February 21st, 1999. He is also preceded in death by his brothers Beverly “Bev” Calvin, William “Bill” Calvin, Douglas “Doug” Calvin, and sister Reba Chapman.
Dorris served our country during WWII as a Sergeant in the US Army Battery C 165th AAA Gun Battalion. After his service in the Army, he workedas a PBX technician for South Central Bell until his retirement. He was a charter member of the Order of Quetzalcoatl, an active member of the Scottish Rite 32 degree KCCH, the Jesters, and the Shriners
Potentate’s Guard where he never missed an opportunity to raise money for Shriners Children’s Hospitals each year. He was always involved in the community whether it was fundraisers to benefit the school his children were attending or coaching his son’s baseball team.
He enjoyed golfing and played a mean game of horseshoes. Witty and outgoing, Dorris was big-hearted and felt by far his proudest accomplishment in life were his children. He lived each day with a grateful heart for having the opportunity to watch his family grow.
He is survived by his children and their spouses: Cora & Ron Dickson of Brentwood, TN; Brownie & Sandy Calvin of Hendersonville, TN; David & LucieCalvin of Germantown TN. Five grandchildren and their spouses: Renee & Don Marsee of Thompson’s Station, TN; Stacy & Chance Davis of Hendersonville, TN; Christian & Mailynne Calvin of Hendersonville, TN Kate & Rusty Horton of Memphis, TN; Meredith & Gary Pearson of Huntsville, TN and ten great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Woodlawn Funeral home, 660 Thompson Ln, Nashville, TN on Saturday, February 9th from 5:00 – 8:00 pm with amasonic service. Visitation will begin on Sunday, February 10th at 12:00pm and funeral services following at 1:00 pm with full military honors
graveside.
Active pallbearers will be Christian Calvin, Chance Davis, Don Marsee, Cody Marsee, Justin Marsee and Kevin Willis. Honorary pallbearer will be Mike Hayes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in his memory.
