Duncan Vail of Hickory died Sunday, February 10, 2018 at his residence. Born and raised in Pinehurst, NC where he graduated from Greenbriar Military School in West Virginia in 1945. After serving in the Army Air Force, he returned to North Carolina to attend UNC in Chapel Hill.
Duncan was a genteel southern gentleman. He was such a likeable person who loved to be around people and share a laugh. He was happiest when he was on the golf course or on the back porch at “tea time” with friends and family. He liked to go fishing at the beach and working crossword puzzles every morning over coffee. He appreciated good food and drink. He loved music…especially from the Big Band era. He was handy at carpentry, helping in the garden and could cook a mean bread pudding. He also loved to go to Harrah’s and try his luck with video poker from time to time. He provided a wonderful life for his family and we will miss him forever.
Duncan was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Sue Vail and his brother, James Vail of Winston-Salem. He is survived by his son, David Vail of Hickory; and daughter, Laura Vail of Conover.
No services will be held at this time. The burial will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Hickory.
Condolences may be sent to the Vail family @ www.drumfh-hickory.com.
