Betsy Anne Griffin, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away from a stroke at age 102 on March 5th, 2019. She lived at Broadmead Retirement Community for 34 years. She moved to Broadmead with her late husband, James A. Griffin, Jr. in the fall of 1985.
The former Betsy Anne Gregg was born in Baltimore in 1917. She graduated from Goucher College in 1939, and spent the majority of her life in North Baltimore and Towson.
As a compassionate and driven individual, Betsy was an active volunteer throughout much of her life. She served the Meals on Wheels program at Towson Presbyterian Church for nearly a decade. She also volunteered at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC Hospital) starting shortly after it opened. She first served as a ‘candy stripe’ aide, and later worked in the hospital’s gift shop until moving to Broadmead.
In her first two decades at Broadmead, she contributed to the retirement community’s newsletter, interviewing new residents to introduce them to the rest of the community.
She was a longtime member of Towson Presbyterian Church, where a family ceremony will be held to intern her ashes beside those of her husband. A public remembrance ceremony will be held at the Broadmead community at a date and time yet to be announced.
Despite all her accomplishments, when asked about her proudest achievement, she said, “My husband was a great man—the love of my life. And we raised three wonderful children.”
Betsy Griffin is survived by her daughter, Sunny Griffin, a well-known model and national television personality during the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, who now lives in Telluride, Colorado, as well as her youngest son Nick Griffin, who resides in Sparks, Maryland. She is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren—Kelly Wagner Osborne of Los Angeles, California mother of great-grandchildren Mabel and Oliver Osborne; Kerry Wagner of Tarrytown, New York; Nancy Griffin of Eugene, Oregon, James Griffin IV of Portland, Oregon, Margaret Griffin of Mount Vernon, Ohio, and Julia Griffin of Louisa, Virginia,
The family has asked in lieu of flowers that contributions be made through www.macular.org to the Macular Degeneration Foundation.
