Kenneth C. "Ken" Martin, age 71, of Alabaster, Alabama, passed away on March 5, 2019, following a difficult battle with cancer. Ken served in the US Army and was a Vietnam veteran. He worked in communications from Southern Bell, to South Central Bell, to AT&&T, to Lucent Technologies, then decided to try his hand on the pipeline. In 2008, he was an Environmental Inspector on in Bristol, Tennessee and in 2010, was Chief Inspector on DOT projects and beyond. In December of 2017, he retired from the pipeline.
Ken loved building project. He built a house and gazebo on the Warrior River, with the help of family and friends. He drew up plans and remodeled the inside of the family home. When it was time to build a new deck, he added a lower deck with fire pit and a gazebo off the side. In the summer of 2018, he built a pergola, and plowed & replanted a portion of the backyard with plans to finish the yard this summer.
He loved riding his motorcycle, playing golf on Thursdays, watching Alabama football, playing catch with his dog, Lizzie, and especially, spoiling his grandchildren.
Ken is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane Martin; son, Kenneth C. "Marty" Martin, Jr.; daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Allen; son-in-law, Steve Allen; two grandchildren, Matthew Allen and Madison Allen; brother, Ron Martin; sister-in-law, Marla Martin; sister, Barbara Martin Blackerby; nieces, Sharon, Sheila and Shea; and nephews, Mitchell and Cody.
His life will be celebrated on Friday, March 8, 2019. A committal service will be held at 11:45 AM at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, followed by a luncheon at 12:30 PM at Southside Baptist Church in Alabaster. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo), with a reception to follow. Pastor J. D. Davis will officiate. The family requests any memorial donations be made to Southside Baptist Church, 7183 Hwy 119, Alabaster, AL 35007, or a charity of your choice.
