She joins her husband of sixty-three years, Herbert Anderson Jones who passed away on December 25, 2016.
She also joins her parents and her step-father, and her sister Beverly June.
Joan’s legacy continues through her sons, Michael, Tim and wife Trena, Andy and wife Estela, and Matt and wife Sherri, in addition to her six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was born Mary Joan Wilcox on November 6, 1929 at Fort Riley, in Geary, Kansas, to Zelta and Lloyd Wilcox.
She was a nurturing and protective big sister to Lloydena Jean, LaVon Jolene, and Lloyd Edward. Joan and her siblings were always close.
Joan joined the Continental Airlines crew as a hostess in 1949. She loved to travel and to be a part of the fast-paced flight industry. It was during her time with Continental that she moved to Texas and met the love of her life, Herb. She continued to serve as a hostess until 1953 when they married and started their family. Even after leaving the airline she stayed heavily involved in the community, founding the Dallas chapter of The Golden Penguins, an organization for retired Continental stewardesses. She and Herb continued to travel throughout their lives.
In the late 1970’s Joan became a Century 21 Realtor. She was a dedicated agent and was so good at her job that some have said she could even “sell ice to an Eskimo.” She loved helping families find their forever homes. In addition to her work duties, she took great pleasure in being part of her Century 21 family and made lasting friendships with her coworkers.
Joan was a strong and compassionate woman. She loved her family. She and Herb taught their sons to be gentleman, to love God, and to serve others as they did. Joan was very involved in her church; she could always be counted on to volunteer or to bake, and she went out of her way to ensure other Church members who were unable to drive could make it to services. She took care of her mother, Zelta, and her step-father, Frank Smaka, before they died.
She loved to read and enjoyed her mystery shows like Murder, She Wrote, Perry Mason, and Father Brown. Joan always spoke her mind and she could be a force to be reckoned with. We smiled every time she said she “didn’t have a stubborn bone in her body,” but her convictions were always motivated by love. Her love was also in every delicious and gorgeous treat she baked for her family, from Barbie cakes to chocolate cream pies. She loved all of us unconditionally and made sure we always knew that.
While her family and friends will miss her, we know she is with God and that we will see her again. We are so incredibly grateful to have had her in our lives.
A private family graveside service will be held at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery where Joan will be laid to rest with her husband Herbert.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Joan's Life will be held on Friday, March 15, 2019 at 12:00 Noon at Valley View Christian Church, located at 17601 Marsh Lane, Dallas, Texas 75287.
Calvary Hill Funeral Home in Dallas, Texas has charge of arrangements.
