on March 9, 2019. Ed was born on May 5, 1943 in Long Beach, California to Margaret
and James Workman. He attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and received his Master’s
from UC Berkeley before embarking on his career as a structural engineer and co-
founding Frame Design Group, Inc. He engineered The Tower in Burbank, California,
called “one of the most important buildings in the history of American post-tensioned
building construction” by friend and fellow engineer, Kenneth Bondy. Ed is named a
Legend in Post-Tensioning by the Post-Tensioning Institute.
Ed’s family appreciated the unique nicknames he gave them, his witty sense of
humor, exceptional memory, immense intelligence, and signature catch-phrases. He
first charmed his wife, whom he fondly called C.B., by explaining the extrusion process
for making rubber garden hoses. He turned interest in locomotives and photography
into a joint creative endeavor, often driving across several states to set up a large-
format camera in time to capture an approaching train.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Eleanor. He is missed by his
wife, Cyndi; and children, Jason, Michael, Rebecca, and Steven; their spouses,
Barbara, Kiana, Marcel, and Samantha; grandchildren, Phoebe, Junah, Ezra, Isabelle,
Elliot, and Avonlea; brothers David (Sophie) and James, and their children; mother-in-
law Dolores Kowalski and extended family; friends and fellow train buffs, and canine
companions, Bella and Olive.
A service honoring Ed will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the
Kiwanis Hall, 7848 Pismo Ave, Atascadero, California. In lieu of flowers please consider
a donation to the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, California.
