Robert E. Carney, Jr., a Baltimore County attorney and Court Auditor, passed away at the age of 87 on March 31, 2019. Bob loved his family, his profession, and his athletic activities to the fullest. He was born on July 8, 1931, the grandson of Thomas Carney, an immigrant from Ireland whose businesses at the intersection of Joppa and Harford Roads established the town of Carney, MD. Bob grew up in Carney on Harford Road during the Great Depression and World War II. Bob attended Immaculate Conception grade school and Towson Catholic High School, graduating in 1948. He graduated from Loyola College of Maryland in 1952. He served our Country in the Army during the Cold War in Europe and returned stateside to attend law school at the University of Maryland, where he graduated in 1957.
Bob married Mary Louise Santora of Baltimore on November 19, 1960. Together they raised six children in Kingsville and, after 1972, in a neighborhood on Manor Glen Road in Baldwin. Bob was a caring, devoted husband and father. He was patient with his children, stressing that they should always treat all other persons with respect and without prejudice. Bob and Mary Lou always impressed upon their children the importance of education. Long time neighbor and dear friend Brenda Smith remembers “I have had the pleasure of being neighbors and best friends with the Carney family for well over 40 years. I like to think our families grew up together; kids and parents. We spent many great Saturday nights and New Year’s Eves together for dinner.”
Bob was a partner with the law firm Moore, Carney, Ryan & Lattanzi (and its predecessors) for almost 60 years. His practice focused on real estate development and transactions. He regularly represented such institutions as Baltimore County Savings Bank, Hamilton Federal, and other community lenders in closing loans for residential purchases and refinances. Bob viewed his practice as community facilitation. Bob helped families purchase and finance homes in Baltimore County neighborhoods and he provided legal services to develop those same neighborhoods.
Commencing in 1984, Bob also served as Court Auditor for Baltimore County Circuit Court after appointment by the Judges of that Court. He continued that service until late in 2018, making him the longest serving Court Auditor in the County’s history. Recently, Administrative Judge Kathleen G. Cox wrote Bob, stating “On behalf of our Bench, I want to extend our sincere appreciation for your many years of service in the position. Your assistance in this role, particularly the efficient and reliable reporting you provide, has been invaluable.”
Bob enjoyed competing in tennis and golf. He was gentlemanly competitive. While he could gracefully accept losing, he relished winning more. He played tennis for many years at Gunpowder Swim and Tennis Club in Kingsville, in leagues at Carroll Manor Elementary, and, off season, indoors. He regularly golfed at local courses and was a member for years at Mountain Branch in Fallston. A friend for 50 years, Delanie “Pat” Patrick recalls “Bob would step up to his ball and deliver typically a downhill, double break 30-foot putt that none of us thinks he can make, but all too often would find nothing but the bottom of the hole. This would invariably culminate in a blood curdling yell of “YO BABY!” which would make us all cringe and shake our heads in disbelief.”
Bob was also an avid bridge player with family and friends. He also enjoyed sharing a joke, a pun, or a good story, working crossword puzzles, and watching Orioles, Baltimore Colts, and Ravens games.
Bob regularly attended services at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Hydes, MD. He served as a Eucharistic Minister for the Church for years. He prepared meals weekly for local foodbanks for donation through the Church to assist those in need.
Bob is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Lou, as well as five children and thirteen grandchildren – Robert F. Carney, Esq. of Pasadena, MD (with wife Kimberly and daughters Marilyn, Victoria, and Haley); the Honorable Anne Marie Carney, Esq. (Dist. 30, ME) of Cape Elizabeth, ME (with husband David Wennberg and children Lillian, Rosalie, and Paul); Dr. Daniel E.
