Maureen J. (Heinz) Young (nee Ternes), (given name, Joan Maureen, but at some point decided she preferred her first and middle name in the inverse order!) passed away peacefully on Friday, March 29th, 2019, with her three surviving children at her side. Maureen was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 24th, 1934, to Gertrude and Joseph Ternes. She graduated from Holy Angels Academy in 1951 and married her first husband, Robert George Heinz, in 1952, in Milwaukee, WI. They had met performing together with the Milwaukee Players Theater. Robert’s Air Force career led to many adventures as their family grew, criss crossing the United States and including a 4-year tour in Germany. Six children in all, with the last (John Eric) born in Germany.
Settling in Dayton, Ohio with her family, Maureen began her long career in civil service, working for the United States Air Force at the Defense Electronics Supply Center (DESC), in Fairborn, where Robert was also stationed. She began as a file clerk/typist and worked her way up to GS-12 specializing in Procurement and Logistics!, She was always dedicated to taking courses to expand her knowledge in support of her career, both within the Air Force and at Sinclair College in Dayton. She retired after 30 years of distinguished civil service with the Air Force in 1997.
Maureen married Ronald William Young in 1977, and they began their own adventurous life together, including great trips to Australia, Hawaii, Alaska, New Mexico and Colorado. Her beloved second husband passed away in 2010, and Maureen spent the remaining 9 years living with daughter Kathleen in Ohio, then Tricia in Kentucky, and then a private care home also in Kentucky.
Maureen is also pre-deceased by her parents, Joseph and Gertrude Ternes, her youngest son, John Eric Heinz, her grandson, Lance Corporal Sean Michael Langley (USMC), her eldest daughter, Lori Susan Feltz, her eldest son, Robert Joseph Heinz, and, most recently, her first husband, Robert George Heinz.
Maureen is survived by her adoring and much adored younger brother, Timothy Joseph Ternes, of Chadds Ford, PA (Jay),and her daughters Kathleen Bauer (Charlie) of Beavercreek, OH, Tricia Langley of Cynthiana, KY, and Melissa Heinz of Madison, WI. She is also survived by her niece, Cristina (KG) Ternes, nephew, Joseph Ternes (Kirsten), her beloved grandchildren, Kimberly Bauer (Tony), Sarah Conley (Matt), Kaitlin Lovell (TJ), John Heinz (Katie), Kevin Heinz, Fred Heinz, Chris Langley (Beth), and Margaret Bennett, as well as eight beautiful great grandchildren.
Always beautifully poised and with a spectacular sense of style and charm, Maureen had a remarkable Irish wit, knew the power of a good story, was quick to laugh, to sing and dance, enjoy good food and wine, and put on an Irish (or German or French) accent on demand much to the enjoyment of all who knew and loved her. The world is nowhere near as bright without her smile. But she joins many loved ones in heaven. With the wind at her back and the sun shining warm upon her ever beautiful face. We will miss this remarkable woman, but she instilled in us all that made her so very special!
