I started working for Monroe in 1981, while we were still Hoover Brothers.  We  had our offices in an older building down off of Canton Street in Downtown Dallas.  It was not a fancy place. We had to move the drunks away from the dock doors in order to get our trucks out on deliveries and the a/v rental side of the business was very new and very rough at times.  Some of the tales that we could tell would probably make most HR dept. shudder to think about it, but they were some of my best memories.  I remember that I had to interview with Monroe for the rental Customer Service Job and I was scared silly.  Monroe can be an intimidating figure to a small town farm girl  straight from Nebraska cornfields.  He could be intimidating, frustrating, and stubborn at times, but it didn't take me long to figure out that I loved his business, I loved the industry and I loved working for him.  I always said that if I ever left the company, that I would never work for another A/V company and I'd have to change my career.  38 years later, I still pretty much feel that way.  His way with people, especially clients was so genuine and clients knew that if he told you he'd do something , it would be done.  His word was gold, his integrity solid and he loved to bring new talent and young, hungry, service oriented newbies into the business.   I had hoped that he'd be around when I retired....I'm still waiting for one of his big send-off parties, but that's not to be.  It's easy to sometimes feel like you're a boat without a rudder now that he's gone,   but I find that he's still very much in my mind and heart and I'm still doing the things just the way that he'd want me to do them.  I think that he's left the company in great hands, Kevin and Chuck will stay the course, I'm sure.  I will miss him greatly and miss our Monday morning Quarterback conversations.  He's in good hands now, enjoying that big resort property in heaven.  

I had the pleasure of meeting Monroe about 33 years ago when I worked for the Ritz Carlton Hotel Company in Naples.  He could light up a room with his conversations and personality.  When I went to work for Kiawah Island Resort we needed to find a new AV company and he was the first and only person that I thought of.  I soon went to work for him and he was by far the best person in my career that I have ever worked for.  He treated everybody like family and his memory and devotion to everyone and this company will live on through us all.  Rest in peace Monroe, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the whole Jost Family.

What a loss we feel at Monroe's passing!  Our connection with Monroe goes back to his childhood.  Monroe grew up less than 2 miles from our farm.  We attended grade school together in that one-room school house half-way between our farms, and enjoyed  many fun experiences, some full of mischievous fun.    We baled hay and bucked bales on a hot summer day (Glenn and Johnny too), then swam in the pond down in the pasture.  The other day while fixing fence and I saw that pond,  I cried as I remembered this great friend.  I'd take him along to local high school ball games.  I always enjoyed being around him.  Then there was the time he drove his Plymouth hemie, taking it to 130 mph in less than a quarter mile, at that school house corner!!   He won at many  drag races he drove in.     In recent years we enjoyed occasional visits on the phone.  It was a pleasure to meet Karen when he brought her to the homeplace farm about 2 years ago.    He was a true friend. Monroe was a man who understood the idea that good and honest hard work is what it takes to get you far in life and I will continue to portray that in all my JSAV dealings to honor him. May your soul rest peacefully knowing we will continue to care for your legacy with the same earnestness that you did. 

I didn't know Monroe for long. I just started working for JSAV back in October. However, one cannot judge the depth of feeling by time. Both Monroe and my husband were Vietnam Veterans. My husband had always made sure that other Vietnam Veterans participated in parades in their honor. My husband made sure to show up at DFW Airport for Welcome Home A Hero, to make sure our men and women in service to our country never came home to the hate and shame he did. But no one, outside his family, had ever told my husband "Welcome Home." 

For Christmas last year, Monroe decided that the JSAV giving would be tickets to the Armed Services Bowl...and my family received tickets. At the event, as they asked our Veterans to stand, my husband stood to cheers like he had never heard before. He had tears running down his face from the joy of finally receiving his "Welcome Home". Other people came up and shook his hand...it was amazing the outpouring of love and appreciation my husband felt. All from a set of football tickets.  

But this was Monroe. The simple things he did, meant so much to so many. But that was who he was. 

Monroe was many things, but the best thing I can say, is he was a warrior. So others understand, I offer up a quote from Sitting Bull -
     "Warriors are not what you think of as warriors. The warrior is not someone who fights, for no one has the right to take another life. The warrior, for us, is the one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, the children, the future of humanity."

This, for me, was Monroe. It's the greatest tribute I can give to him. 

Until we meet again Sir.

I was blessed to have time with him a week before. We had just received an email that week about his official retirement coming up. So I passed by his office and asked if he had a minute. Of course he said, as he always did, "Come on in, what's on your mind, Brett?". I just wanted to thank him for the opportunity to have known him all these years, and for all that he had done for me. Also for allowing me to be a part of such a great accumulation of people.  He had a knack for finding good people, that's for sure. We talked about my wedding, which Karen and he had attended years ago in Cancun. "What a party that was" he said. And it was. 
We have come a long way from when I first met him. Which as I recall, after inviting me to meet him and Hudson in Cancun, the first words out of his mouth was, "So why the heck should I hire you?". . .
I am not sure Monroe, but I am glad you did. My life is better for having known you.


Monroe deaths remind me following proverb:

"What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why you left this earth , or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget. There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in my heart.  We love you and will miss you rest of our life !




Todd & I remember the 1st day we met Monroe in our neighborhood 6 years ago and he stayed a good friend since that day. Karen & the boys we are praying for your strengths and just know Monroe is looking after you all.  
Monroe will be missed daily for sure. Lots of good times we had with him that we will keep in our thoughts & hearts. .  Hopefully he keeps an eye on all of us that loved him. ❤️❌⭕️🙏🏼

Monroe was one of the really great men that I have been blessed to meet in my life.  I had the pleasure to coach his sons in football and basketball when they were young.  Kevin and my son Zach have remained good friends to this day.  I know of no other parent who was as supportive of his boys, our teams, and me as a coach.  One of the really special guys.  I will never forget that larger than life laugh and his love for life and his family and friends.

Monroe was a rare gem.  He believed in having conviction, being a man of his word and having passion for people. He knew how to truly light up a room and he made everyone feel like they were important and treated them like family. Having the pleasure of getting to work side by side with Monroe was an honor and a blessing.  We all learned many lessons from him that we will carry through our professional & personal lives. He will be missed as a wonderful leader, father figure, mentor & friend. I will personally miss his jokes and our laughs we shared. Never far from our minds and hearts as we continue your legacy in this amazing company that you built.

I cannot tell you how saddened I was to learn of Monroe's passing.  After living up north for 20 years, my wife Gail and I hope to be retiring to Texas this year and we both looked forward to seeing Monroe and reminiscing over old times.  Monroe hired me in 1980 and over 2 stints with J&S I put in 14 years with the company.  Monroe was a true mentor to me in what would turn out to be a 38 year career in the Audio Visual industry.  I've used insights gained from Monroe throughout my career.  Monroe was the rare CEO that not only inspired loyalty in his staff but also friendship.  While working for Monroe I married and my wife thought as much of Monroe as I did.  Throughout my positions in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Amelia Island , Florida and Nassau, Bahamas,  Monroe was steadfast in his support professionally but more importantly, his loyal friendship during difficult times will always mean the world to us.  Please know that your father, husband, grandfather, was a giant of a man, a giant in the industry and most importantly, a giant friend.   He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.  Please know our hearts and our prayers will be with you during this difficult time.

I had the privilege to be Monroe's banker for awhile.   I have many memories of our time working together but our friendship was special to me.  When my twins were born they were in the hospital for 3 weeks.   When we finally got to take them home, the next day Monroe and Karen were at my door with a double stroller.  I told him I didn't know he even knew where I lived.  He said, he didn't know but looked it up and had to bring us this gift as he was concerned for my family.  Oh, and that stroller was absolutely awesome and was used all the time.  I could tell many more stories of Monroe being generous, thoughtful, and kind to me and many other people.  He left behind an example of human kindness we can all try to follow.   I will miss him dearly.

Our deepest sympathies! We loved U Monroe for his generous heart and love of talking with people. Greg still remembers the good business advice U Monroe gave him when we moved our little family to the Carolinas and started a new business in a place we didn't have much knowledge about. We always loved being together at Jost gatherings and it made us feel so special when you and U Glens came to see us after you had vacationed together in Hilton Head.   We are praying that you will feel the comfort and love of our Heavenly Father at this sad time. We love you Karen, Kevin, Todd and family's.
