On February 18, 2019 Doris H. Reeves, age 94, previous long-time resident of Otego, New York, passed on to her heavenly home. Doris married her husband, Attorney Frank Reeves in 1950. They spent most of their married life on the family farm in Otego, New York where they raised their daughter, Barbara. Doris was dedicated to family and to her career in education. With the last 10 years, Doris moved to Redding, California to be near her daughter. Doris was a wonderful lady, a beloved wife & mother, teacher, advisor, administrator, and dear friend to many.
Doris was born in Pennsylvania, one of six siblings. She graduated from Kingston Township H.S. and East Stroudsburg College in Pennsylvania before relocating to Otego, NY to teach/coach. Later she obtained her M.S. degree and became a H.S. guidance counselor in Gilbertsville and Unadilla.
In 1965 Doris started working at Hartwick College. She was considered a valued member of the administrative team and held numerous positions there: Assistant Dean of Women, Director of Orientation & Testing, Coordinator of Student Advisement, Director of Social Activities, and Director of Parent & Community Relations. In 1990 Doris was the recipient of the highest award bestowed by the Hartwick Alumni Association: the Meritorious Service Award. After 35 years of service at Hartwick, Doris retired when she was 79, and Hartwick College continued to hold a special place in her heart.
While living in upstate NY, Doris was very active in many community organizations: her church, the Civic Club, Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma, AAUW, and many others. Doris was known for her faith, strong work ethic, uplifting personality, and a caring & generous spirit.
Doris is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara & Dennis Howell, and the families of Brian & Scott Howell. Doris was predeceased by her parents, all of her siblings, and her husband.
Final arrangements are being handled by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta. A funeral service for
Doris will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Doris Reeves to St. James Episcopal Church and/or to Hartwick College for the Doris H. Reeves Endowed Scholarship Fund.
