Born and grew up in Astoria, Cliff Crandall captained the Astoria High School basketball team to the State Championship in 1942. He was enlisted for service in WWII. Afterwards, Cliff enrolled at Oregon State University where he captained the Beavers to the NCAA Elite Eight in 1948 and the next year to the final four. This two-year All American was the first Beaver to score over 1000 points (1255) and shoot a 30-point game (all before three pointers and the shot clock). After graduating in 1949, he joined the AAU in San Francisco where he captained his team to the national title in 1951. He was drafted by the fledgling NBA but couldn't raise his new family on the low wages, times have changed. Cliff and the family moved back to Oregon to start a long career in life insurance where he regularly qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table. In 1981, he was selected to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and in 1990, the Oregon State Athletics Hall of Fame. He was an extraordinary athlete that never bragged, a caring father that was always there, and a loving husband with a passion for his wife of 43 years. He is survived by his wife Linda, sister Jane, brother George, daughter Shari, son Doug, grandkids Brett, June, Kevin and Matthew, and great grandkids Mei Lien, Kai Li, and Cody. We miss him.
