Richard Anthony Palumbo, Jr., 85, of Oldsmar, passed away April 10, 2019 after a battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Nora (nee Griffin), his brothers Joseph and Dennis, and his sister Marian Savides.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Camille. Richard had 6 children: Kathleen (Partner Alan), Gregory (wife Cathi nee Johnson), Daniel (wife Mary Ann nee Filipp), Karen Douglas (husband Chris), Sharon Haltom and Richard III (wife Jodi nee Johnson) and grandchildren: Brian, Keith, Barry, Amy, Christopher, Kelly, Kevin, Nicholas, Maia, Hannah, Sasha, Asher, Richard IV, Ryan, Karrah, and Aaron. He was a great grandfather to Aiden and Eloise. His family was fortunate to have learned from his example and wisdom.
Richard grew up in Chicago and attended Saint Columbkille Catholic School through eighth grade, DePaul Academy and DePaul University. He taught mathematics at Austin High School and Senn High School. He continued his career as a school administrator and principal in Evanston, Schiller Park, River Forest, and Glenview. He was known for advocating for the students and will be remembered for being a great listener. He was revered and respected by so many.
Richard moved from Chicago to Park Ridge, IL, with his first wife Rosalie in 1960, where his children were raised. Later he moved to Oldsmar, FL with his second wife, Camille in 1993. He had many interests and enjoyed making homemade bread, stuffed pizza, oil painting, growing orchids, attending The Florida Orchestra and the Palladium Chamber Players concerts, watching sports, visiting art museums and historical sites, and dining with friends. He had a great love of people, and they of him. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and served on the School Advisory Council for the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School. He and his wife Camille enjoyed traveling, especially with dear friends.
Visitation will be held Friday May 3, 2019 from 6-8 pm in Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home’s Grand Oaks Hall. A Funeral Mass will be Saturday May 4th, 2019 at 11 am in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church followed by a reception in the DuBois Center. Richard will be laid to rest in Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park Clearwater.
