She was born on April 4, 1924 at Lansing. She attended Lansing Grade School and graduated from Ansted High School.
On November 29, 1941 she married her husband, Charles Ervin Syner, and had a long, prosperous and happy marriage of 62 years until the time of his death on November 30, 2003. The couple resided in Lansing for the first 21 years of their marriage, where she performed the duties of housewife and mother. In 1962 they moved to Morgantown and both were employed at WVU Medical Center. Elsie was employed as a Histology Technician in the Department of Microanatomy. After their retirement some 35 years later they moved back to their beloved home in Lansing where Elsie continued to live until September of 2017. At that time, she moved to the Villages of Greystone, an assisted living facility in Beaver, WV and continued to live there until her recent illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ervin Syner; her parents, Ruth and Howard Pennington; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Elsie is survived by her devoted son, Dr. Lawrence “Bo” (Nancy) Syner; four grandchildren: Kristen (George) Bloom, Lawrna (Matt) Walborn, Leslei (Bob) Hinzman; and Lance (Susan) Syner; and nine great-grandchildren: Jenna Bloom, Mabel Walborn, Matilda Walborn, Bailee Hinzman, Wesley Hinzman, Alexus Hinzman, Jack Syner, Charlie Syner and Thomas Syner.
Over the years, Elsie enjoyed sewing and tending to her flowers, shrubs, and every year she raised large gardens. She was an excellent seamstress and made numerous quilts and articles of clothing for many of her relatives and friends.
Elsie was a lifelong member of Lansing Baptist Church where many endearing friendships were made.
Like many of the people of her generation who were born before and lived through the Depression, she believed strongly that a conservative lifestyle and a willingness to work were the keys to a successful life.
The family would like to thank the employees and caregivers of The Villages of Greystone and Bowers Hospice House for the kind and loving care Mrs. Syner received while at those facilities.
A special thank you from her family is also extended to her granddaughter, Leslei Hinzman, who spent many hours at her grandmother’s bedside, provided additional care and provided insight into many difficult decisions that needed to be made during the last three weeks of her grandmother’s life.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations in her memory be made to Lansing Baptist Church, PO Box 43, Lansing, WV 25862 or the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Mr. David Michael Allport and Pastor Kenny Hayes officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Ansted.
The family will receive friends from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday at the funeral home.
