Shirley Mae Browning, 89, also known as ‘Grandma Chocolate Browning’ departed this life to be with the Lord on May 5, 2019. A private family entombment will be held at Resthaven Mausoleum in West Des Moines with a celebration of life on Sunday, May 19, 2019. The time and place has not yet been decided.
She was born on May 19, 1929 to the late George and Marie Nabers and grew up in St. Louis with her younger sister, Laverne. After graduation from high school, she received her diploma in cosmetology from La Belle College of Cosmetology. Shirley later retired from Saint Louis University and the 1818 Advanced College Credit Program after 23 years of dedication and service.
She married Harold F. Browning on October 19, 1957 at the North American Martyrs Catholic Church. Together they raised three children; Ronald, Linda and Allen in the St. Louis area. After retirement she moved to central Iowa to be closer to family. She loved to travel. Some of her favorite places included Branson, Florida, Boston, Mexico and anywhere with a nearby casino! She mostly enjoyed quality time with her family, which included spoiling five generations of children, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by her sister, Laverne; daughter, Linda; eight grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren and 25 great-great grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Harold; sons, Ron and Allen; and four grandchildren.
