He was the son of the late Joseph Beach Hord, Sr. and Janet Steed Hord. He graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1961, with a Physical Education Degree. After serving 4 years as a 1st Lt. in the Marine Corp, he became a teacher and coach in Beaufort, South Carolina where he met his wife of 54 years, Lynda Morillo. He later earned a Master’s Degree in Political Science from Appalachian State University and furthered his education in counseling at Xavier University. Professionally he spent his life working in the non-profit world serving as Director to Children’s Homes and Episcopal Retreat Centers in Texas, North Carolina, and West Virginia. He was known for his compassionate and genuine leadership. Dick ran five marathons and had a passion for playing tennis. He was an avid reader and a devoted member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church for over 35 years.
Mr. Hord is survived by his wife, Lynda, his sister, Janet Cross, and his children Steed (Rebecca), David (Amy), and Jennifer (Adam Reda). Also surviving are 6 grandchildren Elias, Levi, Zachary, Tucker, Bridget, and Tacoma.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2pm on May 20th at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Greensboro. The family will receive friends following the service in the Haywood Duke Room. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Hospice & Palliative Care of Greensboro, Parkinson’s Foundation, Holy Trinity, or a charity of your choice.
