Irene Y. Stevens was born in New Bedford on June 26, 1929. She died peacefully after a brief illness in the loving presence of family at Charlton Memorial Hospital on Sunday, May 12, 2019. Irene was the wife of Harold Stevens who was previously deceased.
Irene is survived by her sons Phillip Brodeur, Michael Brodeur and his wife Linda, Grandchildren Scott Brodeur, his wife Heather, Jennifer Brodeur, her companion Victor, Crystal Nunes, her companion Victor, Chevon Nunes, her companion Donald and her recently deceased grandson Jagger Gibeault. Irene, our family matriarch also had 10 great grandchildren. She was married on two occasions, the first marriage to Arthur Brodeur. Irene left behind her cherished dog, Spike who was her constant shadow and she loved like her child.
Irene was born during the great depression to working class 2nd generation immigrants from Canada and worked all her life in many local factories. She worked many years as a forewoman at Payne Cutlery where she met her second husband Harold Stevens. After the closing of Payne Cutlery Irene worked until her retirement as an embroiderer at a local hat company.
Anyone who knew Irene, would know of her love for animals. She was forever feeding and caring for local strays. She lived most of her adult life in Wareham until moving in along with her son Phillip to Freetown into the home of her son Michael and his wife Linda. Mom was limited in mobility since suffering a stroke in August but enjoyed watching the squirrels, humming birds and the occasional deer through her window where she kept vigil for wildlife. Her feisty sense of humor was adored and will be greatly missed by her family.
Her arrangements are in the care of Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02745. Her family will be having a private gathering on Saturday, May 18, 2019 for family and her close friends at 11:00 am at her family home at 179 Braley Road in Freetown, MA.
