She graduated from Lowell Teachers College in Massachusetts with a BS in Education. She earned her MSEd from Boston University and her PhD in Curriculum and Teaching with a concentration in Reading from Fordham University. She began her teaching career in the Newton, Massachusetts Public School System. Later she decided to teach in an American Dependent School and was assigned to a school on the US Airforce Base in Wiesbaden, Germany where she met Captain John Albanese, MD. After their marriage, they made their home in Scarsdale, NY where they raised their three daughters.
In the 1960s, Dr. Albanese taught Reading at Quaker Ridge School in Scarsdale. After completing her PhD, she was a full time Professor and Chairperson of the Graduate and Undergraduate Education Departments at Iona College. She holds the title of Professor Emerita. During her tenure at Iona College, she supervised student teachers, taught methods courses, ran an on-campus Reading Clinic for local K-12 students, wrote curriculum for the NYC Board of Education, Mt Vernon, and the Yonkers School Districts. She served on the Board of Trustees of Iona Grammar School for many years. She was a parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and later St Pius X Church, both in Scarsdale. Dr. Albanese was an avid reader, and a pianist. She enjoyed traveling the world, but her greatest love was her family.
She is survived by her three daughters Paula (Jerry Magaletti), Marybeth (Jay Petschek), and Kathie (John Barbera)and her grandchildren John (Cristen), Mark (Sandra), and Amy Magaletti, Andrew and Laura Petschek, and Jake and Julie Barbera. She has four great-grandchildren.
Her husband, John, passed away in 2010.
