Oct 5, 1930 – May 23, 2019
Frances Hanshue of Oklahoma City, beloved wife, mother and friend transitioned from our presence into eternity Thursday night, May 23rd, just before midnight at the age of 88 years old. Frances lived with grace on a long and difficult journey through the harrowing changes dementia brings. This grace was a divine endowment from her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Those whom she left behind have been saying goodbye for a long time, to the woman who was and will always remain held in our hearts and minds.
It’s not the natural, wasted shell that we hold; it’s the gutsy, career-pioneering, strong woman who raised four children nearly single-handedly, and who stood by her husband of 48 years through thick and thin and through eras of tremendous personal, political and social upheaval. This is the Frances we will continue to think of, venerate, glean lessons from, laugh with/about and wish we could pick up the phone and talk to.
Frances Krise was born on Oct 5th, 1930 in Cleveland, OH to Harold and Hazel Krise. She had a twin sister, Ruth Violet Krise, who did not make it to her 2nd birthday. She was also blessed with three brothers: Jack, Harold and Tom Krise, who all married their loves and raised their families. Jack and Harold went ahead of Frances, as did her parents. No doubt she received a hardy welcome at her homecoming!
Frances survived a childhood disease at ten years of age, and despite the doom and gloom reports from doctors, she went on not only to graduate high school, but to earn her Registered Nurse (RN) diploma. Frances married Douglas K Hanshue in 1952 and started a family. They had four children; Gary, Kevin, Hillary and Holly who all married their loves and raised families of their own. Mr. Hanshue preceded her in death in January of 2001, as did son Kevin in 2005.
Most of her adult life, Frances worked as a nurse, while simultaneously raising a family. She LOVED nursing! She loved all things medical and the medical environment, but most of all the patients. Her career took her to South Community Hospital, Saint Anthony’s Hospital and Griffin Memorial Hospital (from which she retired), not to mention working Home Health Care and Hospice.
When her children were small, Frances volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Campfire Girls Leader. She worked in her garden, canned vegetables and sewed clothes for her daughters. She pulled shifts on the local Neighborhood Watch program and was an integral part of the Wiz Kids program, helping children learn how to read. Mr. Hanshue was an over-the-road truck driver. The absenteeism that is part and parcel of that job often put a tremendous strain on Frances, requiring her to be both Mother and Father many times. She just kept going, doing her best, relying on God for grace.
Frances loved The Lord and relied on Him for daily strength and encouragement. She was a life-long member of Jefferson Heights Baptist Church, later renamed New Heights. She saw to it that her children were in church every Sunday and volunteered there on numerous occasions for various endeavors/seasons.
Frances is survived by her son Gary Hanshue and wife Mary Ann; granddaughters Stefanie McFarland and husband Jaime; granddaughter Nicole Brisco; grandson Benjamin Kennedy and wife Christine; her daughter Hillary Rippee and husband Leon; granddaughter Danielle Adams and partner Jeff Lane; granddaughter Caroline Waldrup and husband Beau; her daughter Holly Bradford and husband Glenn; granddaughter Rachel Baldwin and husband Branden; granddaughter Shannon Colbert and husband Alonzo, plus seven wonderful, great-grandchildren- Jordan and Josiah McFarland; Olivia, Sadie, Violet and Paisley Waldrup and Zoe Colbert. She will be missed and remembered. A Graveside Service will be held at 10am Wednesday, May 29 at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
