Don will be missed by his loving wife, Ellen; his children: Pamela (Robert) Czlonka, Zachary (Nancy) Herbig, Melissa (Len) Crane, Amy (Tyrone) Williams, Lynne (John) Houlihan, Randall Brooks, Beth Brooks Armstrong, Kent (Sue) Brooks, John Brooks and fiancé Susie Brown, and Andrew (Marcia) Brooks; sister-in-law Edna Herbig; 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, Emil and Estelle Herbig and brother, Jack Herbig.
Don proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1951; stationed on the USS Askari during the Korean war. He was awarded the Victory Medal, Good Conduct, Korean Ribbon and Navy Occupation.
After the U.S. Navy, Don joined the Grand Rapids Police Department in 1952 and was honored to work there for 33 years. During his years of service he was awarded multiple sharp shooting awards, and retired in 1985 as a Lieutenant.
Don and Ellen are devoted Catholics. They both were members of the Snowbird Club and moved to Florida permanently where Don enjoyed his days with his family, friends and was an avid golfer. Don was a gentleman, and a gentle man. He lived his life to the fullest and had a joy for living, he will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan at later date.
Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Theresa Catholic Church, Spring Hill (Florida) or Grand Rapids (Michigan) Police Honor Guard.
