Sherwood (Hank) Stern, 89, of East Meadow, NY, passed away in his sleep Wednesday, June 5, 2019 after a difficult battle with kidney disease. Sherwood is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gertrude, daughter Beth Lembo and her husband Joe, son David Stern, grandson Matthew Lembo, brother Neilan Stern and his wife Mona, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Julia Stern.
Sherwood was a proud veteran of the U.S. military where he served as a Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant.
Sherwood was kind and caring and friendly to everyone, which earned him the nickname “Uncle Hank”. After retiring from a long career as a Production Manager in the NY garment industry, he took up golf, which became a lifelong passion. His crowning golf moment was a hole-in-one, which occurred June 11, 1997. Sherwood enjoyed spending time with loved ones, watching his favorite baseball team, the Mets, solving crossword puzzles and spending an enjoyable evening playing cards or shooting pool with friends and neighbors. He was always there to lend a helping hand with household projects or computer questions.
A special thank you from Sherwood’s family to the many people who phoned and visited and offered prayers during his final days. Your loving support is much appreciated.
A graveside funeral service for Sherwood will be held at Beth Moses Cemetery, 1500 Wellwood Avenue, West Babylon, NY, on Tuesday, June 11 at 1:00 PM.
Shiva will be observed at Sherwood’s home in East Meadow, NY on Wednesday, June 12 and Thursday, June 13 from 1 pm to 8 pm.
