Norbert William Bakas, Col USAF Ret., PhD, age 95 of Ross Township, died peacefully on Friday, June 21, 2019, after an extended period of home hospice. Norbert was born August 13,1923 in DuBois, Pennsylvania and was the last of five siblings. Preceded in death by his beloved wife Virginia Adele McKee Bakas, Colonel Bakas is survived by two daughters; Cheryl Bakas Ryberg of Ross Township, and Susan Bakas McCullough (Ken) of Tacoma, Washington, three grandsons; Wyatt Powers of Apex, NC, Andy McCullough (Amanda) of Canton, MS, and Ryan McCullough (Laura) of Somerville , MA, and four great-granddaughters; Asha Celine Powers, Madison Rose McCullough, Morgan McKee McCullough and Mackenzie Grace McCullough.
His military career, spanned from Iwo Jima where he was a medic, photographer and x-ray technician
to the Pennsylvania Air National guard. For more than 75 years he had a second successful career as a well respected hypnotherapist, publishing two books on hypnosis. Norbert, always engaged the world around him, loved conversation, read voraciously, and enjoyed cruises world wide with his wife, and to visit family. Norb volunteered with the American Red Cross both as a First Aid Instructor and, with his wife, Virginia, as a Water Safety Instructor Trainer. He was a long time member of Emmanuel’s Lutheran Church in Bellevue, and St John’s Lutheran Church.
Family will be receiving friends on Saturday, June 29th, 2019 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Orion C. Pinkerton Funeral Home, Inc., 1014 California Ave., Avalon., (412-766-5600). Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2019 at 3 PM. Burial with Military Honors will take place in Bayne Cemetery on Monday, July 1st, 2019 at 10 AM (EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT THE CEMETERY). In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 920 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15229 and designate the Quilting Ladies in the memo portion of your check, as this is a means to assist refugees world wide with warmth.
