Devra Freelander was born in Suffern, New York. She attended Ridgewood High School in New Jersey, studied Studio Art at Oberlin College, and received her MFA in Sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design.
Devra’s art was about the Earth. She created sculptures and videos that celebrated the planet’s sublime beauty and documented its rapidly changing climate. Her work was characterized by brilliant colors and natural geologic shapes, and it was beautiful.
In 2017 Devra’s sculpture “Fluorescent Sunrise” was exhibited at Socrates Sculpture Park in New York City. More recently her collaborative 2019 work “Eventual Artifact” was on display in Times Square. Devra was also a founding member of the artist collective MATERIAL GIRLS.
Devra was beloved by her parents Rabbi Elyse Frishman and Rabbi Daniel Freelander, her brothers Adam and Jonah, her sisters Julie Stein and Sarah Perlmeter, her niece Aviva, and countless adoring friends and family.
Contributions may be made in Devra’s memory to Socrates Sculpture Park’s Emerging Artist Program at socratessculpturepark.org/donate.
