She was born in Chattanooga, TN on June 13, 1936 to the late Madolyn Pierce Ward and Thomas Pierce.
Ms. Johnson graduate from Chattanooga High School in 1953 and studied music at Cadek Conservatory at UTC under the late Doris Doe, Professor Emeritus at the Conservatory.
She was a member of Central Baptist, Woodmore were she served on the personnel committee, sang in the choir and taught Sunday school for more than twenty five years.
Currently a member of Concord Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for more than twenty five years, sang in the choir, and was Director of the Senior Citizens Organization known as the BALL CLUB. Combined over 60 years of teach Sunday School.
Mrs. Johnson was administrator for Associates in Internal Medicine for twenty-eight years and later formed Medical Practice Consultants. She was a well known workshop leader and conference speaker.
She developed the Chattanooga Medical Group Management Association 1st local first local chapter and served two terms as president. She served a President of the Tennessee Medical Group Management Association (TMGMA), and a member of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) National Association. Also a member of the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE).
She is a Fellow in the American College of Medical Practice Executive. Past president of
TMGMA, she served on the TMGMA Board and Chairperson of Past President Council.
The TMGMA presented its first “Distinctive Service Award” to Mrs. Johnson. The association named the award in honor of Mrs. Johnson. The “Martha Johnson Distinctive Award” will be awarded annually to a person who has served for more than 20 years and made an outstanding contribution to health-care, and advanced he field of medical practice management.
She was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Joey Johnson, her parents, Madelyn Pierce Ward, Thomas O. Pierce, and her grandparents Bernice “Buba” and Luther Webb.
She is survived by her husband, James L. Johnson. In addition to her husband she is survived by her sons, Joe Charles Johnson, Sr. of Ringgold and Timothy W. Johnson and his wife, Cindy Johnson of Collegedale; two granddaughters, Jessica Johnson and Ashley Johnson both of Collegedale; three great-grandchildren, Madeline Doyal, Daniel Johnson, and Gage Doyal all of Cohutta; one sister, Doris Kittle of Ringgold; and one brother, Terry Lee Ward of Nashville. She leaves several nieces and nephews all of the Ringgold area.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. David King officiating.
Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday, July 8, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
