1938 – 2019
Leonard Harried Long, age 80, died on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at his home. He was born on August 11, 1938 in Wayne County, North Carolina to Elma Dan and Virginia Aline McCullen Long. Leonard graduated from New Hanover High School and Cape Fear Community College Fire School. Leonard liked working with his hands and was a welder and tool and die maker. He was employed at various businesses in the Wilmington area including Colonial Food Stores, Singer, American Standard, Sturdy Truck, and Timme/Deportere Corporation. He also owned and operated LGS Machine and Welding until his retirement.
Mr. Long was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon. He was a lifetime member of Wrightsboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue and served as a fireman, Board of Directors, Assistant Chief, and served as Chief for 12 years. He served on New Hanover County Fire Commission, was a member of the North Carolina Fire Association, The North Carolina Fire Chiefs Association, and the North Carolina Retired Fire Chiefs Association.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Mary Helen Rivenbark Long, daughters, Lynne Huggins (Ronnie) of Rocky Point and Lisa Sowell (Greg) of Virginia Beach. Grandchildren Elizabeth Andrews (George), Chloe Lowe (Forrest), and Bradford Sowell and great-granddaughter Mazie Andrews.
A visitation will be held Sunday, July 7, 2019 from 6pm to 8pm at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be Monday, July 8, 2019 at 12:30pm at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home and a burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park with Pastor Aaron Doll officiating.
