Jimmie George Winters, known to family and friends as “JG” or “Jim” (1936-2019) of Katy, Texas passed away on July 5, 2019 in his home with his wife and family by his side. Jim was born in Hobbs, New Mexico on October 2, 1936 to Elizabeth Lucille Winters and Marvin James Winters. After high school in Odessa, Texas, he proudly joined the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army. After serving for three years, Jim was Honorably Discharged after a parachute accident. Due to his love for his country, he continued to serve in the Army Reserve. Following his time in the service, Jim began his career at Grant Oil Tool Company in Odessa, while attending college. He later moved his family to Houston and worked at Loffland Brothers Drilling Company and ATCO Drilling, Inc., as the General Manager responsible for U.S. drilling. He ended his oil field career at Grey Wolf, Inc., formerly DI Industries, as the Vice President of Capital Assets. After corporate life, Jim followed his love for the outdoors and became the General Manager at the Texas Trophy Ranch, Beaver Creek.
Jim was a man who loved his wife, his family, hunting and fishing. If he could roll them all into one, then that was a perfect day. He was happiest when he had a fishing rod in his hand and a grandchild by his side. You knew how much he loved you, by the nickname that he gave you. Everywhere he went, it was his goal to make someone smile. Whether you were a nurse, grocery store clerk, waiter or waitress, Jim Winters was going to put a smile on your face. He had a strong work ethic that gave him success in his career, a remarkable memory that gave great detail to every story he told, and a giant heart that made him so easy to love.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Betty: daughter, Julie and Wray Rives of Coppell; daughter, Janet and Greg Burkett of Katy; daughter, Judi and Dan Post of Katy and son, Jimmy and Leisa Winters of Katy. He was affectionately known as “Grandad” to his eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Josh and Mindy Rives and their three girls, Lucy Kate, June Marie and Ruby Claire, Wes Rives, Jacob Rives; Brett Burkett, Blake and Erin Burkett; Lexie Cawley, Conner and Brittany Cawley, Jeff and Jessica Post, Brandon Post; MacKenzie and Maci Winters. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
