Dorothy Thelma (Metazgar) Greenman was born on October 3, 1912 in Fife Lake, Michigan. She married Earl Greenman and they had four children, Charles, James, Earl Jr. and Ethelwyn.
Dorothy was born in interesting and difficult times. Dorothy and her two sisters, Leota and Lena were placed in an orphanage at a young age. Dorothy was adopted by an elderly couple, the Harrington’s. Like all people who met Dorothy, they immediately feel in love with her and they adopted her. They owned a farm and that is where she met her future husband Earl. Earl worked on a family farm nearby.
They married and lived on the Harrington property and cared for the elderly couple until their death. The farm was left to Dorothy and Earl. They later sold the farm and moved to Lansing Michigan.
Dorothy saw many historical events. She lived through the Great Depression, through World War II, where she worked in an ammunition factory and the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. She moved to Missouri to be closer to her daughter Winnie. She lived in Missouri the rest of her life.
She spent her time in Missouri helping to raise her grandchildren and attending all those events that grandparents love to go to. Christmas concerts, sports events, graduations and countless holidays and birthdays. She lived many years with a long-time roommate, Amy Strahl. They were known to go out occasional and “tear up the town,” dancing the night away.
Dorothy loved to do crossword puzzles, cheating occasionally by looking at the answers, and doing jigsaw puzzles. She would never turn down a trip to the casino or a scratch off lottery ticket. She was always lucky, once winning $5,000 on a scratch off ticket.
Dorothy leaves behind a trail of descendants that will carry on her legacy for centuries to come. She had 19 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, 28 great-great grandchildren and 4 great, great, great grandchildren. She had special relationships with all of them.
Dorothy lived with her daughter Winnie and son-in-law Stewart for many years. She moved into the Oak Pointe Community a couple of years ago and loved living there. Like everyone who meets Dorothy, she was immediately loved by the residents and staff. Dorothy died peacefully at the young age of 106 with many of her loved ones by her side.
Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 10th from 10:00 a.m until Noon at the Covell Funeral Home, with a graveside service to follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery in East Jordan at 1:30 p.m.
