She was born to the late James Nathan and Rosalie Matilda Estridge Brown. Rose grew up in Kingstree, SC before attending Stephens College and Converse College and graduating with three music degrees. She moved to Charleston, SC and became the Ballet Mistress to the Dock Street Theater. Her love of dance led her to teach ballet for the next two decades. While in Charleston, she met the love of her life and married David H. Wayt in 1962. Together they lived all over the South and Midwest, raising two daughters. She later worked for the University of Michigan for 15 years, starting in the Medical School Administration Office before becoming the Registrar for the School of Music. Her creative drive took many forms: creating and sewing theater costumes; designing and making custom stain glass windows, designing and remodeling houses in the U.S. and Sweden; and landscaping yards in seven states. Rose enjoyed throwing parties and collecting friends all over the country.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, David; her two daughters, Sims Wayt and husband Zack Kitchen, of New Bern, NC; Sian Wayt and husband, Per Wingerup, of Topsfield, MA; and her four grandchildren, Linnea, Sydney, Kajsa and Paden. The family wishes to thank all those who cared for her during her last days.
A private party celebrating her life will be held in Murrells Inlet, SC at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Rose's name may be made to the Colonial Capital Humane Society in New Bern, NC.
