I’m sad for all of us who knew and loved Uncle Bob. It’s the end of an era. Throughout my lifetime, I’ve had the good fortune of learning from him—it was like having a spare dad in my back pocket.  As a young child, I learned to swim in his pool under his guidance, and later, to dive off what is probably one of the few remaining diving boards in San Diego.  He took me on my first water ski outing, but failed to mention I should let go of the towrope if and when I fell. (I never repeated that mistake!) He took me as a teenager on my first snow ski trip after I’d earned the money for the $8 lift ticket by washing his car on multiple weekends. That chore was more profitable than Aunt Mary’s standing offer to pay a penny per fly swatted off their windows. He taught me to drive the stick shift in his little truck. When boyfriends came on the scene, I can still feel my face burning with embarrassment because of his relentless teasing.
As a young adult, I loved being neighbors with Aunt Mary and Uncle Bob. They were such great hosts for summertime swims and Friday night happy hours. He always invited his friend, Jack. The mother of all happy hours, however, happened every Christmas Eve when he hosted family and friends and friends of friends to that beloved annual tradition which continued throughout his remaining years at home.  It was his gift to us.
Uncle Bob worked hard and he played hard.  He was a fun-loving attentive host, adventurous and daring, passionate, proud, strong-willed and a very persuasive debater—to put it mildly. His signature tongue roll let you know when he was concentrating. He was smart, and he was successful in all of the ways that counted. I’m blessed to have had him in my life for so many years, and I will carry thoughts and memories of him and my dear Aunt Mary (who truly was the sweetest person I have ever known) for the rest of my life. RIP, Uncle Bob.
