Bernice was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. She met her husband Clifton Poindexter at a Boston Pops Concert during WW2. He was serving in the Navy and Bernice was in training as a Christian Science Nurse. After the war they moved to Memphis Tennessee where they had two sons, Leon and Al. Bernice entertained family and friends with stories of her experiences as a child in Massachusetts and her move to the South.
Bernice was active for many years in the Jacksonville Christian Science Churches and served in many capacities including Sunday school Superintendent and First Reader. After her husband retired they bought a trailer and for many years toured all 50 states, Canada, the Holy Lands, and they cruised the Panama Canal. They enjoyed camping and square dancing.
Bernice was extraordinarily kind and giving. She focused her love and attention on Cliff, Leon and Al and then embraced her two daughters in law, Neuza and Carole. She was “Grammy” to her grandchildren Avery and James, and their cousins and to neighborhood children .
Bernice is survived by her sons Leon Poindexter (Neuza da Silva) and Al Poindexter (Carole) and two grandchildren, Avery Sander (Paul) and James Poindexter (Katherine).
