Rosemary Metz (nee DeLuca) of Detroit died Thursday August 15 at the Arbor Hospice Residence at Saline Evangelical Home. She was born into a tight knit Italian family and raised in Detroit, attending St. Albertus elementary school and Felician Academy High School before attending Marygrove College for 2 years. She married Sol Metz in 1967 and moved to Whitmore Lake. As their family grew, they moved to Ann Arbor. They had four children and divorced in 1987. Rosemary retired from University of Michigan but she was unable to stay away from the educational setting. She returned to UM to earn a bachelor's degree in film studies with honors in 2003 at the age of 66. She then earned an MA in creative writing from Eastern Michigan University in 2005 and immediately enrolled in the MSW program at UM, completing that program in 2007. Her educational pursuits then satisfied (and lifetime student loan maximum met), she settled into the usual post-graduate life of watching movies at the State Theater, reading The New York Times every day, and using the computers at one of her favorite places, Angell Hall.
Rosemary moved into Saline Evangelical Home in November 2010 and was taken care of by the most amazing staff for almost 9 years. She remained inquisitive about her caretakers to the very end, always asking about their lives and would have follow up questions at their next interaction. She enjoyed passing out candy to children at Halloween, attending writing group, trying to keep squirrels and chipmunks out of her bird feeder, and receiving human and canine visitors (except weekdays between 2-3 pm when General Hospital was on).
Rosemary was survived by her four children, Diana (Peter Goldstein) of Austin, Texas, Marta Metz of Grand Rapids, MI, Andrew Metz (Libby Graham) of Islandmagee, Northern Ireland, and Liza Metz (Shane Dudek) of Monroe, MI, as well as her sister Margarite McLeod of Harper Woods, MI two grand-daughters (Bianca and Ariana Goldstein) and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Donato and Mary DeLuca, her sister Nunnie Davis, and her former husband, Sol.
Services on Thursday August 22 with family visitation from 2 - 4 pm at Muehlig Funeral Chapel with a service officiated by Rabbi Robert Dobrusin at 4 pm. A funeral mass is scheduled for Friday August 23 at 11 am with luncheon to follow at St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church at 910 Austin Drive, Saline, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the resident fund or staff fund at Evangelical Homes of Michigan Foundation at 34024 West 8 Mile Road, Suite 101, Farmington, MI 48335.
Very special gratitude to the staff of Saline Evangelical Home for taking care of her for so many years, especially to the staff (social workers Liz, Nichole and others) that worked so hard to ensure that she was able to attend Liza's graduation in April 2018 and her wedding in June 2019. We were able to create many memories. Special thank you to Dr. David Hackenson and Rita at the University of Michigan ER-Critical Care Center for spending so much time with her family and helping her return home. Thank you to Melissa, Marva, and Di at Arbor Hospice who ensured that Mom, Marguerite, Liza and Marta were comfortable and peaceful.
