He married the love of his life, Marie Edith Potter in 1942.
In 1941 he joined the Halifax Rifles and later the Grenadier Guards 22nd Canadian Armoured Regiment, and fought in WWII in Holland, Belgium and France. He received many medals, and was mentioned in despatches by Order of King George, for his service. After the war, he was a chauffeur in Chester for a short time and started a family, before becoming employed at CFB Cornwallis in Maintenance from where he retired after 25 years. In 1995, he and Marie enjoyed a trip to Holland, where they were joined by other Canadian Veterans to be thanked and recognized by the Netherlands on the Anniversary of the end of WWII and the Liberation of France and the Low Lands. In 2015, he was awarded the Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour on behalf of the Government of France and also the Canadian Veterans Recognition from the Canadian Government. He was a Lifetime Member of the Royal Canadian Legion with over 70 years as a Member. He was a modest man who didn’t expect any special acknowledgment for his achievements in life.
Over the years, he and Marie loved to square dance and play bridge, and in later years, his daughter was the recipient of his knowledge and expertise as his bridge partner.
He was predeceased by father Fletcher; mother Nora; wife Marie, and son Terry; brothers Arnold, Eric, Garnet, Lloyd, Neil, and Vaughan; sisters Lillian, Jean, and Mary, and sister-in-law Freda Macken. He is survived by sisters Frances and Joyce, and children Rodney (Wendy) and Margery (Rod) Ellison, grandson Scott, and granddaughter Carolyn (Craig) Ingram, and great grandsons Owen and Isaac Ingram.
He was a kind and caring man, who would volunteer to do anything for anyone and he was respected by so many. He always put others needs before his. He taught by example. He was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He was a jack of all trades and his children knew he could build or fix anything. He enjoyed making hoops for hookers. He had a great sense of humor and was a great story teller keeping his son entertained for hours.
He will be greatly missed by his family and cat Minerva.
He is now at peace, reunited with his loving wife and son.
A Royal Canadian Legion tribute service will be held Tuesday September 3rd, 2:00 PM followed by the funeral service all from Jayne’s Funeral Home Digby, 245-2525. Rev.
