Professor Michael Boshernitzan, a beloved husband and father and a brilliant mathematician, died peacefully with his family by his side in Houston on August 28, 2019. He was predeceased by his first wife Inna Boshernitzan, and is survived by his wife Natalia Boshernitzan, his sons Zvi and Yaniv Boshernitzan, his stepson Shai Bernstein, his sister Sylvia Moscona, and his grandchildren Eva, Arianna, and David Boshernitzan.
Michael was born in Chernovitz, Ukraine, USSR in 1950 to Esther and David Boshernitzan. He developed a deep love for mathematics at a young age, and enjoyed competing in Mathematical Olympiads, winning regional, national, and international medals. He left his hometown at the age of 15 to study at an elite math school in Moscow. Despite being the first in his family to study at university, he received his PhD after studying at the most elite universities such as Moscow State University, Hebrew University and Weitzmann Institute.
He and his family made Aliyah to Israel in early seventies where he proudly served in the army, married Inna, and fathered Zvi and Yaniv. After earning his PhD in Israel, Michael became a postdoctoral member of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies and later became a full professor at Rice University in Houston.
Michael was respected by the mathematical community as a brilliant and engaging mathematician with original ideas which he shared generously. He was also revered by those around him for his kindness, loyalty, and idealism.
He was a beloved husband, father, and friend and will be missed dearly.
