Wilhelmina F. Woods (Mina) 87 years of age, died peacefully with family and caregivers present in San Antonio, TX. Born to William and Rose Farrell in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, Mina was the big sister who loved and adored her six younger siblings. Although a self proclaimed ‘Texas Girl’, Mina enjoyed returning home to attend family reunions and was even able to attend her 68th high school reunion held in October, 2017.
Mina met and married her beloved husband Arthur during the Korean War and remained by his side until his death in March 2018. The couple spent 68 years together raising their four children and building a memorable life in San Antonio, Texas. Money was tight with the rapidly expanding family so Mina learned to be innovative in cooking, sewing and finding ways to entertain the children. She believed it important to encourage their participation in a variety of opportunities. Her children enjoyed going to symphony and theater events, learning to play musical instruments, participating in band and choir groups, boy and girl scouts, team sports and various other events while growing up. A favorite memory is going to see Tiny Tim live singing ‘Tiptoe through the tulips’!
Mina attended local community education programs to pursue her journalism interests and later created poems and memoirs. When Mina applied for jobs of interest to start her career, she seemed to always have the ‘necessary skills and experience’ to do most any job. Mina taught herself the skills necessary to be successful in any role that was offered to her. Highlights of her career included waitressing, book keeping and office managing. As grandchildren came along, she found her purpose in teaching classic nursery rhymes and songs, introducing them to computer learning, sharing her life experiences and reading to them in hopes of supporting their future successes in life. Bowling was a passion for Mina and she loved teaching the grandchildren to enjoy this sport. A favorite outing for Mina and the grandchildren was to the Fort Sam Houston Quadrangle to teach them about the beauty of nature, peacocks and other animals.
Mina’s talents of sewing and crocheting became a life time passion of artistic expression. She was known for creating beautiful quilts and afghans, designing colorful dolls, door stops and a variety of unique crafts. Mina delighted in gifting her creations to others. She generously shared these talents with anyone interested in learning. Many friends and family members learned the basics of these special skills and will carry on her passion. Mina’s family and friends have many of the treasured handmade classics now displayed in their homes and hold them as gifts for generations to come.
The expression “there are no strangers here, only friends we have not yet met” describes one of Mina’s most enduring traits. She encountered new friends most anywhere she went and with one encounter, quickly learned their life history, how many children/grandchildren they had (or were planning), their career or college interests and various other tidbits of interest. Mina also loved gardening of flowers and plants. She harvested many of her original collections to share with anyone who admired them. She experienced great joy in offering all gifts as a deep expression of love.
We will all forever treasure the gifts and special memories of our Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Although we miss her dearly, we know Papa is so incredibly happy to have her by his side again.
