Annie Cornwell passed away at her home in Vestavia Hills, Alabama after a long battle with multiple myeloma Friday September 6, 2019. She was born Jan. 14, 1937 in Montgomery, Alabama, the son of Lewis and Ella Adams. She was a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama. Annie received both her Bachelor’s and Masters of Science degrees from Auburn University in Food and Nutrition, completing her studies in 1962. She completed her Dietetic Internship at Vanderbilt University Hospital. Annie had an extensive career in nutrition education including being a Lecturer at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas, prior to joining the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 1975. She retired in 1997 as Associate Professor in the Nutrition Sciences Department where she taught for over 22 years. Annie held various leadership roles in professional associations and extended her passion in nutrition education to community service by serving as coordinator for Dietetic Services at Camp Seale Harris Diabetic Camp for children, consultant to the Jefferson County Office of Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels Program, and others. Annie resided in Vestavia Hills for 38 years and is survived by her two daughters: Eva Payne (Rusty) and Laura Denver, grandchildren Clark McLemore, Lewis Denver, and Kate Denver. Annie is survived by two brothers, Howard (Cheryl) Adams and Tom (Lee) Adams, and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family extends sincere heartfelt gratitude to Evangelina Patton for her loving care throughout this year.
The Alabama National Cemetery has strict and limited allowances for flowers. In lieu of flowers we would suggest a scholarship contribution. Annie always valued education and in particular, the education of women. She understood that through education women could be empowered to support themselves and their families. She found an outlet for this in the support through the UAB Women’s Club Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to women annually who are students at University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 2013 Annie Cornwell generously donated the initial gift to inspire the club's membership to launch a successful scholarship endowment campaign.
In lieu of flowers donation can be made in Annie’s memory to this or the charity of your choice. Gifts can be made payable and mailed as follows:
