Ed was born in a Red Cross Outpost in Loon Lake, Saskatchewan on October 15, 1935, weighing 9 pounds 8 ounces. His father was charged $25 for the delivery of which $15 was paid. Ed joined seven older siblings on a Makawa, Saskatchewan homestead and a younger sister would follow a few years later. He spent the first years of his life there before the family packed up their worldly belongings and headed east to his father’s boyhood home of Woodbridge, Ontario.
Ed passed away on September 9th in Niagara Falls, just one month shy of his 84th birthday. He is predeceased by his parents Julia and Gordon Longhouse and siblings: Zelma Stonehouse, Phyllis Coulton, Muriel Brownlee, Dan, Jack, Bill and Bob. He is survived by his sister, Doreen Bryson and his children: Gordon (Shireena) of Melbourne, Australia, Blair (Jenny) of Springford, Lisa De Angelis (William) of Burlington and David of Niagara Falls as well as his grandchildren: Joel, Alex, Claire, Ryan, Andrew, Lily, Elliot and Stephanie. He is loved by his extended family which included many life-long friends.
While his final years were spent in Niagara Region, a part of his soul will always remain in Red Lake. It was in that remote northern community that he would spend many hours ice fishing and moose hunting with his second father, ‘Uncle Mike’. Now they are together once again, likely making sausage.
Ed could never sit still, he was always working. Whether it was building a spit for one of his famous BBQs, planning a family reunion or building a community, Ed was happiest when he had a project. Some of his projects are unfinished but he rests in peace knowing that others will carry on his legacy. It was time to pass the torch and he left this world as he lived his life, on his own terms.
The family will receive visitors at HETHERINGTON AND DEANS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 5176 Victoria Ave. Niagara Falls on Saturday, Sept 14 from 1-3pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Salvation Army of Niagara Falls, Ontario
