Tim to most, “Teddy” to some, was born in Hartford to Matthew and Bridget Herlihy Cronin on August 27, 1930. He grew up in Bloomfield, graduated from Bloomfield High School and Fairfield University, where he played on their first basketball team.
Tim was a son, cousin, brother, husband, brother-in-law, uncle, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved every role. His father—his first boss on the landscaping trucks was a giant to him. His mother was a joy—he loved trips with her to G. Fox in Hartford, and Christmas remained a particularly special time of year for him as it did for her.
Tim served as a First Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955.
Tim started his insurance career at The Travelers in the Claim Department before leaving for the agency side, first with Fred Castonguay and ultimately at the Thomas Fahy Agency. The work that he loved best though was with the Democratic Town Committee in Hartford, helping to get out the vote by working the phone banks in the basement of the Branford Street home, and especially serving on the staff of U.S. Congressman Bill Cotter.
Tim leaves his beloved Rosemarie (Mike), wife of 63 years and his children and their spouses: Kevin and Nancy of Amston; Jim and Katy of West Hartford; Tim and Chunxia of Unionville; Matt and Patty of Newington; Kerry of Roslindale MA; and Sean and Lisa of Southborough MA. His loved and loving grandchildren: Megan, Madeline, Justin, Ran, Liam, Bridget, Daniel, Stephen, Luke and Scott; and great-grandchild Aalif. Also surviving him are his sister Joan Tyler; brother Matt and wife Sue; brother-in-law Newman Flanagan and wife Eileen; sister-in-law Helene Flanagan; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and -nephews.
In addition to his parents and in-laws: James Flanagan and Rose Freeley Flanagan, Tim was predeceased by brothers-in-law Rev. James Flanagan, Joseph Flanagan, SJ, and Kevin Flanagan. He was also predeceased by his brother Rev. James Cronin, a loss which was a particular heartbreak—he will be glad to see him again.
