Firmino Ascencao Correia, 96, of Hartford, beloved husband of the late Maria Cecilia, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2019 in Hartford, with his family by his side. Born in Madeira, Portugal, he immigrated to the United States with his wife in 1980. He was the father of eight children, Maria Jose, Jose Manuel, Fatima, Piedade, Orlando, Jose Maria, Elisabeth and Cecilia. Firmino is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren and his sister from Lisbon, Portugal. In addition to his wife of 66 years, he was predeceased by his son Joao.
Firmino was a veteran of the Portuguese Army during WWII, and worked for the Port Authority of Madeira, Portugal before emigrating to the U.S. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Hartford and employed in Maintenance Services before retiring. In his younger years he was a sportsman and outdoorsman as he participated in cycling races and semi pro soccer. He had a love for the ocean and was passionate about fishing, snorkeling, spear fishing as well as cliff diving. One of his proudest moments was becoming a U.S. Citizen with his wife in 1998 and respectfully placed their certificates on the family picture wall. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9–10 a.m. on Tuesday (October 1st) at D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Fatima Sq., Hartford. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford.
