Glenn Edward Hunter was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to Edward Raymond Hunter and Helen Eileen (Bee) Mc Donald. The family lived on their farm northwest of Prince Albert, in the district of Alingly. During WW2, they moved to Nova Scotia and then settled in the coal mining town in the Crow’s Nest Pass, Blairmore.
Glenn finished schooling and graduated from Blairmore High School. After a stint in the oilfield, Glenn attended business school in Edmonton, graduated, and was then hired by the Bank of Nova Scotia. He was given the job and the responsibility of financing large, heavy equipment and was soon transferred to Grande Prairie, AB.
During his first two years in Grand Prairie, he met Edna Hunter, and on May 5th, in 1962, they were married. Their son Donald Hunter was born a year later on May 9th. In 1965 their family expanded to welcome Katherine Paula Hunter. Glenn’s favorite family moments were always centered around Christmas and the Summer Vacations at the lake. He especially loved fishing.
In 1972 he realized a dream of owning a business by going into partnership to buy Northern Trailer and Toyota. In 1973 Glenn became the sole owner of Northern Trailer and Toyota, and soon he expanded the business by building a new dealership. From 1974-1980, the business was booming. In the 1980s, due to government restrictions on imports, the business became hard, and Glenn suffered his first heart attack in 1984.
In 1986 Glenn’s daughter got married to Perry Zelman. In the pursuit to live in a warmer climate that would be better for his health, he and Edna moved to North Vancouver. In North, Van Glenn bought a Texaco Gas station. It later became an Esso, and Glenn expanded his business by purchasing another gas station that His son, Donald, and his wife worked in. Glenn and Edna enjoyed their life in North Van – especially the mountains and warmer climate.
In 2000 Glenn and Edna’s first grandchild Aleena arrived; in 2004, Zachary came along (Papa affectionately called them “Nee Nee” and “ZacMan.”) Glenn loved the 9-1-1 calls from his daughter and grandchildren that always started with “Papa can you help…”. Edna and Glenn centered a lot of their lives around the comings and goings of their grandchildren.
In 2007 Glenn took a job at the Grande Prairie Golf Course. Six months out of the year, he would live in Grande Prairie and work. Glenn loved his job as the groundskeeper. He was in charge of mowing all the fairways with the larger mower. Glenn was diagnosed with lung cancer in the spring of 2018. After attending his Granddaughter’s high school graduation, spending a wonderful time with family and extended family, he began radiation treatment. On August 29th Glenn suffered a heart attack on the sidewalk just outside his home. A valiant effort brought him back to life and miraculously he was given the gift of life for one more year. He courageously lived in a declining state – never complaining and always happy to spend time with family and friends, who would visit him at home, the hospital, and the care home. Edna would always faithfully visit him every day. At Rosewood, they celebrated their 57th Wedding Anniversary, Birthday, and Father’s Day. The staff at Rosewood enjoyed their time with Glenn. We were sad yet grateful that Glenn was taken to Heaven, where he now lives fully restored with no more limitations and only joy!
