Alan Charles Bennett, age 73, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, his mother Ruth, and his brother Dave. Alan is survived by his father, Charles; his children, Anne (Ken), Laura, and Daniel (Laura); grandchildren, Olivia, Olivia, Nick, Josh, Monica, Tony, Beatrice, and Matilda; as well as his great-grandchildren Jackson and Addison and his special friend Michelle. He remained close with his extended family and enjoyed the love and support of a large group of friends. Alan was a loving father, a skilled attorney, an amateur historian, and a devoted environmentalist before most people knew that word. He spent his entire career with the firm, Law, Weathers, and Richardson, serving at one time as the firm president. He is the author of a history of that firm, a copy of which resides in the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library. Alan was also involved in the original Ottawa Hills neighborhood historical committee. He remained connected to the family farm where he was raised and always enjoyed a chance to take his children and grandchildren to ride horses. He loved travel and debating politics. Although the disease robbed him of so much at the end, Alan never lost his sense of humor or his memories of the people he cared about. He was smart and generous and will be deeply missed. An informal visitation will be held on Saturday, October 5, at Reyers North Valley Chapel from 1-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you treat your friends or family to Alan’s favorite food: ice cream. Sit around, talk and truly enjoy your time together. Laugh. If possible, please talk about horses, the law, Mackinac Island, or maybe model trains. You could also discuss how many things can be fixed with duct tape (hint: it’s almost everything).
