Juan J. Andreu Villafaña

Juan is survived by his wife of 63 years, “Carmita” Andreu, his son, Juan Jose Andreu, Jr., daughter, Carmen Catalina Andreu, and daughter-in-law, Mary Karrer Andreu. His grandsons are Hector Luis Cruz, 1LT Maximiliano Rafael Cruz and Michael Joseph Andreu.

Juan was passionate about his family and a dedicated friend, always remembering birthdays and special occasions. He was “muy formal” in the way he extended his hospitality. When Juan Jose first brought Mary to the house, Juan Andreu welcomed her with chilled “Cidra” in champagne glasses! He and Carmita loved decorating the house for holidays and the Noche Buenas at the house were memorable! He was also the chef in the family, winning “la batalla de las Paellas” in a contest with Mary’s father, Richard Karrer. Juan’s dish was outstanding! He was also famous for his “frijoles negros”, “carne fria” and “escabeche de pescado.” All of these recipes are very complex and Juan was painstaking in preparing them.

As the boys grew up, Juan delighted in watching his grandsons change from lively little boys to fine young men. We nicknamed him the “Club Man” because, while he wasn’t afraid to break sweat doing yard work, he preferred dressing nicely for a party and enjoying drinks with his friends. On Fridays he and Carmita would enjoy “Viernes Sociales.” He would prepare her Manhattan first, before making his own Martini.”

Juan was also very devoted to the Virgin Mary and prayed the full Rosary daily. He usually had his rosary beads with him, and he even had a little metal chain in his pocket that he used as a portable rosary. Carmita’s most recent anniversary gift to Juan was a rosary with large beads, because his hands had become so arthritic.

We like to believe that by the grace of God and the compassion of Mother Mary, Juan was wisked away on angel wings. We miss you, Papi.
