Al served in the United States Navy during WWII, on the USS Essex Aircraft Carrier in the Pacific Theater. He fought victories at the Solomon Islands, Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Battle of Kwajalein, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. After being honorably discharged, he was a professional Fire Fighter in Davenport, IA for several years. After relocating to Long Beach, CA, Al worked for the United States Postal Service, retiring after 23 years. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Marie Sagner; and one sister, Erma Molle. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruby; and one sister, Margaret Kakert of Davenport, IA. Al and Ruby have two children, Debbie (Larry) Zeilstra, and David (Eileen) Sagner. They have been blessed with seven grandchildren, Beth (Joe) Young, Christopher (Jenny) Zeilstra, Charlene Grinsell, Jamie (Casey) Miller, Curtis (Elizabeth) Zeilstra, Shannon (Matt) Lee, and Sara (Trevor) Morris. To add to that joy, there are nine great-grandchildren, Jaycob and Emma Young, Ava, Collin, Natalie and Levi Zeilstra, Roland, Alaric, and Theoden Miller. Al was a wonderful dancer, and he and Ruby spent many happy times on the dance floor. The waltz was a favorite, but they also danced the polka and many others. He also enjoyed any kind of card game, but his favorite hobby was bowling. He was very good at that also, and was frequently mentioned as the high bowler in his league. Al had a very patient, kind, and thoughtful way about him. He will be forever in our hearts, but now is forever in God’s Heaven. We will meet again.
