Sue was a lifelong learner and pursed a wide variety of passions. She graduated from Bay City High School in 1971 and then earned her first of two bachelor’s degrees from what is now Texas A & M University at Corpus Christi with a major in Speech Communications and Spanish. She later earned her Teaching Certificate at the University of Texas, San Antonio, after which she held a variety of teaching positions.
Sue was an enthusiastic crafter, and she was a particularly accomplished fiber artist. Sue was a member of the Fredericksburg hand-working guild for over 20 years and won numerous awards for her superior spinning and weaving work. Sue also enjoyed sharing her extensive knowledge of pioneer herbal remedies and handcrafts through hands-on demonstrations at the Merriman Cabin in San Marcos. Another of Sue’s lifelong passions was the genealogy research she completed with her mother and sister. Sue was a master at pursuing and researching clues and spent countless hours interviewing people and traveling to courthouses and libraries across the state of Texas to look through historical records.
Yet, the most important of Sue’s many passions was family. There are no words for the depth of the love she had for her family. Sue was predeceased by her father, James Bailey Morris, mother, Louise LaSalle Morris, sister, Frances Marie Morris and brother, Tine Bailey Morris. Sue is survived by her son, Ben Powell, of Reserve, LA; daughters, Audrey Sansom of Buda, Elinor Rosales of Austin, and Emily Sansom of Luling; brothers, Jim Pierce of Birmingham, Mike Senna of Chillicothe, and Charles Morris of Abilene; sister Cheryl Hensley of Jonesborough, TN; 3 grandchildren and one on the way: and numerous aunts, cousins, and close friends.
Finally, Sue was renowned for going above and beyond to lend a helping hand to family and friends. If a person mentioned a need for something, Sue would do her best to grant that wish. In addition to her volunteer work at the Cabin, Sue also volunteered at the Samaritan House in Vernon and taught dozens of non-literate adults how to read and write in English and Spanish through El Buen Samaritano, Austin.
The family will receive guests for a time of visitation from 9:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown. Funeral services will follow at 10:00 A.M. in the chapel of Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home. Interment will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Georgetown.
In lieu of flowers, the family has created a go fund me to help offset the cost of Sue’s funeral and memorial headstone. Heartfelt thanks in advance for any help with this sensitive matter. gofundme.com/1pfqd9c0ao
